Local man John Assheton of The Mullet Press based in Milton, Banbury has, for the last week, been undertaking a massive cycling challenge from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for local charity Banbury Young Homelessness Project (BYHP).

John and his wife Amanda have been supporters of BYHP for some years and as Amanda had previously undertaken a challenge for BYHP, John decided to go for the challenge known as #LEJOG, cycling some 874 miles in an attempt to raise £10,000 for the charity.

Having left Land’s End on Tuesday 12th April John hopes to make it to his final destination within 10 days, arriving on Thursday 21st, beating Amanda’s 11 day record!
After 6 days John has already reached nearly £4000 for BYHP which will help provide support to many young people across Banbury and the surrounding area, as BYHP requires over £200,000 a year to support them with Family Mediation, Counselling, Housing Advice and Employability Training.

To add to the challenge, John is also managing to find the time to write some poetry describing his exploits and why he is doing the challenge and it can be seen at www.themulletpress.co.uk.

Tim Tarby-Donald, Head of Business at BYHP said:
“Supporters like John and Amanda are invaluable to the work we do supporting Young People locally – it is amazing that people want to push themselves to the limit to help us continue our work. Thanks so much to
them and the kind people who have donated”

The cyclist is off again, He's on the bike, this time!
The wife will not be far behind, with maps and food - and wine!

They're heading for the North again, to raise some cash once more,
for BYHP's good works to carry on, to help the young and poor.

From 16 years to 24, they're only kids, you know.
They need our cash, both yours and mine, though BYHP, for them to grow.

Penzance is the first place we pass, whilst heading up to Bude,
But with no van to spend the nights, we'll need a place to snooze.

For ups and downs the Cornish hills, do beat the Scottish slog,
Which many think is steep but is a third less so, thank God!

"The time has come", the Cyclist said "to think of other things.
"Not Donald Trump or Cameron's tax, but chains and cleats and things!"

And so it was, that off they shot, To Land's End, with the bike.
Boot stuffed full with odds and ends, Like pumps, spare tyre and lights.

They reach Land's End, mid-afternoon, so Cyclist made a start,
Full 25 good miles he did, then headed for a bath.

Tuesday now, 8.30 go, to Crambourne, where he left off,
and took the dreaded A30 for the most direct route north.

Bude was out 'cause timing showed, we must get home more soon,
so kept up on the '30 from morn to afternoon.

It really is a hellish road, all speeding trucks and vans -
but carried on regardless, 'though wife was not a fan!

In one piece still, by Okehampton, with pasty stowed in tum!
(good lunch supplied by worried wife) but worse hills still to come!

Weather was quite good to us, sunshine and light breeze blew,
one hail storm to break the norm, but still fantastic views.

Off A30, the final push. Full speed to Tiverton,
with 40 miles still left to do we made it there by 7.

The total for today now stands, at 104 all in!
So managed more than thought we could on first day's marathon.

Day two began with mist and fog how soon to burn away?
But Beambridge Inn was comfy spot to spend the night - hooray.

From Tiverton to make the start, and took the back roads first.
Then Wellington to Taunton on, then Bridgewater we passed.

Heading north with now blue skies. The temp began to soar,
took break for lunch at Orchard Pub, then headed north once more.

Past Burnham, Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Portishead,
and then past Bristol, Thornbury, to Ham to rest a head.

Kind Campbell friends can give us rest and kindly take us in.
With food and bed and easy chat, and tonic - with some gin!

Day 3 and Cyclist must hit the road, it's cold enough for frost.
But headed north to Gloucester first, where promptly he got lost.

Escaped the centripetal draw that is the Gloucester way.
But only wasted 20 mins to find where Worcester lay.

On and on, whilst other half, found light distractions to -
practice her photography of Tewkesbury Abbey's views.

The Cyclist, whilst trucking on did note with some regret,
that every point, that once sold fuel now hand washed cards instead.

The knees did start to feel the pace, but no relaxing yet,
still many miles to Telford town, or nearby place to get.

To Shifnel, was the chosen spot, the old Park House hotel,
a walk to ease the aching limbs then supper - all still well.

Day 4 was grey and lightly wet, soon off to get ahead,
Preston-bound and 90 more would see us there for bed.

An early stop for bacon bap, as energy was low.
But bike is great, so far at least, with many miles to go.

Through Newport town and Market Drayton,
Audlem village and Nantwich, straight on.

This includes the Cheshire plain, which is known for being flat,
but it is not! So hills again.

On through Wigan city centre Only 15 miles to go,
trying to miss the Friday traffic, failed, quite damp but without snow.

Preston now is closely beckoning, somehow met with brother Ralph,
he and Cyclist met in garage, almost chance as 'time slot' brief.

Found accommodation unit, in a Travel Lodge this time,
morning came and who should greet us? Andrew Langdale, coat like mine!

Very kindly he had joined us, in his matching uniform,
pushing Cyclist ever onward, up Shap Pass, much like a storm.

Down to pub, just short of Penrith, for a super BLT.
Karen Addison there to greet us, off we went now full of tea.

On to Carlisle, both still rolling, catch a train, we must not miss.
Andrew heading back to Banbury, with his trusty bike and bits.

We then back to stay with Karen, all of 20 miles back-track.
This time not on bike but with it, on the good old car bike rack.

Fish pie eaten with great relish, then a bath and bed we fell.
Off for early start at Carlisle, Glasgow is next port of call.
