350 guests arrived to a champagne reception followed by a delicious dinner and dancing to ”The Maniacs” and discothèque by Gavin Townsend.

The highlight of the evening was a fundraising auction where auctioneers Simon Harris of Berry Morris and Mark Osborne of J. M. Osborne ably coaxed partygoers to dig deep into their pockets. Some fantastic auction prizes were very generously donated and over £18,000 was raised by the auction. Together with donations and sponsorship, both business and private, the evening raised a total of over £25,000.

This huge success for a local charitable event must be attributed to the fact that BYHP is seen as an exceptionally worthwhile charity, working for the good of the local community and providing a lifeline for many Young People in Oxfordshire.

Each year BYHP works with approximately 400 Young People, aged between 13 and 25. BYHP works in a holistic way to prevent homelessness, with specialist workers helping young people to tackle the underlying problems. BYHP runs a number of life skill classes, including literacy, budgeting and cooking, to enable the Young People to move forward towards independent living. With new funding streams, BYHP is working with young people to help them to develop work related skills, offering supported work experience in the new social enterprise.

Blenheim Triathlon 2010

Triathlon 2010On 5th June 2010 BYHP took part in the Blenheim Triathlon for the third year running. We had six young people involved this year, four doing the individual sprints and two taking part in the team.

The event was held at Blenheim palace and what a wonderful day it was, our young people put in so much effort and did a fantastic job in not only taking part but also by completing the course.

After the great experience the young people had from doing the triathlon they now want to take part in different triathlons across the country, therefore we are going to carry on training throughout the year to make sure they are ready for whatever challenge comes along.

BYHP Football Team

BYHP Football TeamJustin started a football team for BYHP back in August 2009, although it took a while getting the team together it has now taken off really well.

We entered the team into a local five a side league and we play every Monday evening. It took a while for the team to find its structure and start playing together which led to us losing quite a few games to start with. So Justin introduced some training and it made a real difference, we now have a really consistent side and they gel together really well.

Football is a really good way of getting the young people to engage and not only do they love it, but it also keeps them fit, healthy and away from the temptations on the streets. They get a real sense of team achievement and not only do they feel part of a team but they have also learnt how to be part of a team.

Tudor Hall Big Sleep Out

Tudor Hall Big Sleep OutOn Friday the 5th of December, a brave and adventurous group of sixth formers participated in the Big Sleep Out, to raise money for BYHP.

Charlotte Allen, Sixth Form Pupil writes:

“We threw ourselves into the event with whole-hearted enthusiasm. A furious competition of shelter building erupted. Tarpaulins, boxes, masking tape and string were fiercely fought over.

We were relatively lucky with the weather, as the temperature only just reached minus 1, and it only rained a little! We started the evening around a bonfire singing our hearts out. By midnight people were more interested in sleep.

Morning came soon enough and the breakfast was extremely welcome.

We all really enjoyed the event, but at the same time it put our lives into perspective. It made us understand how lucky we are to have a warm dry bed, especially at this time of year. None of us would wish to have to sleep out every night. We have raised over a thousand pounds for BYHP, and after our experience we fully recognise the importance of the charity to so many people”.

Some had trained with a local triathlon team, but the level and final time seemed fairly irrelevant compared with the sense of being in a team and enjoyment for everybody who took part, in the most beautiful of surroundings, while raising money for BYHP.

A huge thank you from us all goes to everyone who took part, to all those who supported us on the day and to all those who sponsored our runners.  We are hoping to further expand our entry next year, so please get in touch if you feel that you might be interested!
