Big Sleep Out – In Aid of BYHP
raising awareness of homelessness

What is it?
The Big Sleep out is an event for raising awareness of homelessness and involves giving up your bed for the night and experiencing some hardships of sleeping rough. You will need a cardboard box & sleeping bag or something else to sleep in.
Where will it happen?
The Big Sleep Out can take place wherever you choose, as long as it is safe and you have the permission of the owner - your school, church, garden etc. It can be either outside or perhaps on a hard floor inside somewhere.
What do I do next?
Get a group together for the Big Sleep Out and e-mail to receive sponsorship forms and any further information you may require.
When will it happen?
It’s flexible – any winter evening – e-mail us with your date and we will send you a pack.
What if we cannot sleep rough?
OK- why not Sleep in by organising a pyjama party or sleep-over and charge an entrance fee as a donation to BYHP?
If you are not on our mailing list and would like to receive further details of these and other events, please email or call Joanna Cook on 07880 741160

BYHP Previous Events
Fairport's Cropredy Convention 2010
BYHP would like to thank David Cooper and One Man Band for once again very kindly donating a fiddle to be raffled at the Fairport Festival held on 12th to 14th August 2010.
The fiddle was signed by many of the artists performing this year, and raised the tremendous sum of £2091.
It was won by a local Cropredy family, Elsbeth Tibbetts and Ellie Tibbetts.
BYHP would also like to extend their thanks to Laura Cooper and her dedicated team of volunteers for their tremendous fundraising efforts this year.
This is the fifth year the BYHP has run an event at Fairport and it has been worthwhile in raising funds and raising awareness of the important work which BYHP carries out.
Playday in Peoples Park
BYHP was delighted to be invited to take part in the town's Playday in Peoples Park on Wednesday 4th August.
We made crepes free for children and just £1 for adults!
Everyone who attended had a wonderful day, despite the weather in the morning!
Triathlon 2010
On 5th June 2010 BYHP took part in the Blenheim Triathlon for the third year running. We had six young people involved this year, four doing the individual sprints and two taking part in the team.
The event was held at Blenheim palace and what a wonderful day it was, our young people put in so much effort and did a fantastic job in not only taking part but also by completing the course.
After the great experience the young people had from doing the triathlon they now want to take part in different triathlons across the country, therefore we are going to carry on training throughout the year to make sure they are ready for whatever challenge comes along.
BYHP Football Team
Justin started a football team for BYHP back in August 2009, although it took a while getting the team together it has now taken off really well.
We entered the team into a local five a side league and we play every Monday evening. It took a while for the team to find its structure and start playing together which led to us losing quite a few games to start with. So Justin introduced some training and it made a real difference, we now have a really consistent side and they gel together really well.
Football is a really good way of getting the young people to engage and not only do they love it, but it also keeps them fit, healthy and away from the temptations on the streets. They get a real sense of team achievement and not only do they feel part of a team but they have also learnt how to be part of a team.
Gardeners' Question Time
On 7th June 2010 a Gardener’s Question Time and Lunch was held on a beautiful June day at Hill Grounds, Evenley
90 gardening enthusiasts put their questions to an expert panel, consisting of James Alexander-Sinclair, Sue Bedwell, Rosie Campbell-Preston, Timmy Whiteley and Janet Cropley. Following this, James ran a very lively auction of gardening paraphernalia.
A delicious lunch was served by the committee. Then guests were invited to visit local gardens and nurseries for the rest of the afternoon.
A total of £3500 was raised which will go to BYHP (Working with Young People), the local Banbury based charity which supports over 400 disadvantaged Young People a year in the local area.
BYHP is indebted to the fantastic committee and panelists and also to Kim and Josie Golding for kindly loaning their marquee for the event.

Full of smiles at reaching the top, they are both very proud of raising over £400 for BYHP.
Art Exhibition
An Exhibition of Art was held on 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th March in St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, King’s Sutton in conjunction with the King’s Sutton Literary Festival.

The event was a great success in promoting positive relationships and a better understanding between different generations in the Banbury Community.

Tudor Hall Big Sleep Out
On Friday the 5th of December, a brave and adventurous group of sixth formers participated in the Big Sleep Out, to raise money for BYHP.
Charlotte Allen, Sixth Form Pupil writes:
“We threw ourselves into the event with whole-hearted enthusiasm. A furious competition of shelter building erupted. Tarpaulins, boxes, masking tape and string were fiercely fought over.
We were relatively lucky with the weather, as the temperature only just reached minus 1, and it only rained a little! We started the evening around a bonfire singing our hearts out. By midnight people were more interested in sleep.
Morning came soon enough and the breakfast was extremely welcome.
We all really enjoyed the event, but at the same time it put our lives into perspective. It made us understand how lucky we are to have a warm dry bed, especially at this time of year. None of us would wish to have to sleep out every night. We have raised over a thousand pounds for BYHP, and after our experience we fully recognise the importance of the charity to so many people”.
Dancing Display
On 4th December the Morris Dancers from St Mary's Primary School took to the floor in Banbury and put on a tremendous dancing display in the town centre. The children danced to the accordion played by Mr Stephen Wass their Headteacher.

Banbury Christmas Lights Switch On
On 30th November the Young People from BYHP ran a crepe stall at the turning on of Banbury Christmas lights.

The winners, Brad Keenes and Andrea Randall were presented with two beautiful decanters, kindly donated by Villeroy & Boch. A silent auction, raffle and donations by some very generous supporters meant that approximately £2,000 was raised for BYHP.

This year BYHP also ran a spray tattooing fundraiser, and we would like to thank Millie Yates, Rebecca Calvert and Ryan Eakitts for their help with this.
BYHP has done a roaring trade throughout the festival both on the field and the Fringe in the village, these funds will help Young People in Banbury and across Oxfordshire who have been made homeless through no fault of their own.
This is the third year that BYHP has run a stall on the Fairport field, and it has been worthwhile in both raising much needed funds and also spreading the word about the important work which BYHP carries out.
Open Air Theatre
Historical
drama came to Wroxton Abbey in July 2008, when Mr. Hart’s Theatrical Company presented “The
Rivals” by Sheridan.
The Company very generously donated £1 from each ticket sale and all the proceeds of the refreshments and raffle to BYHP.
Guests picnicked by the lake during the internal, and picnics to order were provided by Miss Georgina Harris who very kindly donated a percentage of the proceeds to BYHP.
Wroxton Abbey’s stunning Doric Temple and formal knot gardens of 17 Century Wroxton Abbey, the ancestral home of Frederick, Lord North, former Prime Minister, were a perfect backdrop for this delightful 1775 comedy of manners and characters.
BYHP would like to extend grateful thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hart for their generous support of BYHP and to Wroxton Abbey for allowing us to use its spectacular grounds.

Blenheim Triathlon
The Blenheim Palace Triathlon took place on 6th and 7th
June 2008, and this year BYHP had a vastly expanded
entry of 37 fantastic runners. For many of them, it was the
first time that they had done a triathlon, either individually or as
part of a team.
Some had trained with a local triathlon team, but the level and final time seemed fairly irrelevant compared with the sense of being in a team and enjoyment for everybody who took part, in the most beautiful of surroundings, while raising money for BYHP.
A huge thank you from us all goes to everyone who took part, to all those who supported us on the day and to all those who sponsored our runners. We are hoping to further expand our entry next year, so please get in touch if you feel that you might be interested!

Some fantastic auction prizes were very generously donated and a staggering £26,000 was raised by the auction. Together with donations and sponsorship both business and private the evening raised a total of £40,000.

to BYHP in September 2007.
