Accessing Education, Employment and Training

employment

BYHP supports young homeless people to access education, employment and training (EET) across Oxfordshire. We outreach to support 14-19 year olds in Youth Hubs and hostels, providing advice and guidance and linking young people to EET opportunities available to them. We employ an Additional NEET Response Personal Adviser who works closely with Oxfordshire County Council’s NEET services to help young people gain employment or education opportunities. This enables BYHP to link young people into training and employment initiatives at an early stage and break the "no job, no home, no job" cycle. The Personal Adviser has developed close links with training and employment providers in Banbury.

Aims of the Additional NEET Response service are to:

  • Increase the number of young people from identified vulnerable groups into learning or employment
  • Engage young people who have been NEET for more than 3 months in personal development opportunities
  • Reduce the number of NEET young people with whom we have lost touch
  • Provide Information, Advice and Guidance for NEET young people across the county within their specific vulnerable group
  • Take referrals from, and refer to, the area NEET Response Teams (soon to be part of the Hubs within the Early Intervention Service) at monthly case load meetings
  • Assess young people’s needs
  • Work with young people on their caseload for 2months, providing intensive support and moving them to EET
  • Advocate for young people looking for work and/or learning
  • Broker suitable work and/or learning placements and accompany young people to interviews, tasters, job coaching, etc.
  • Provide professionals working with unemployed teenagers with ad hoc specialist advice around barriers to EET for vulnerable groups
  • Keep an overview of countywide statistical information about their vulnerable group
  • Share information about specialist support and opportunities available
  • Lead on projects focused on tackling barriers to EET for specific vulnerable groups
  • Refer young people to further provision

Referral priorities for 1:1 Support:

  • Young people who are NEET and living in hostel or temporary accommodation or at risk of homelessness
  • Those who are ready to move into EET or other Personal Development Opportunities
